Glossary of Bedding Terms
Bias – fabric turned and stitched on the diagonal to allow a smoother-lying surface, particularly around corners.

Boullion – an elegant trim of flowing rope fringe, usually 2” to 4” long

Braid – any rope-type trim of colored threads or beading used for accenting fabric in furnishings.

Chenille - a softly woven fabric of nubby or velvet-y yarns, especially soft and luxurious in feel.

Damask – a tone-on-tone fabric featuring a textured, woven design.

Decking – in a bedskirt, the flat surface of fabric that fits between the mattress and box spring. Decking is generally the same size as the box spring.

Flange – a flat, decorative edging along a pillow or sham. Flanges may feature mitred corners (as in a picture frame) and are typically ½” to 2” wide.

Jumbo Welt – a larger piping where Ύ” cording is covered in fabric and used as a decorative trim.

Matelasse – a quilt-like, single-ply fabric where a design or pattern is stitched into the surface in contrasting or monotone threads.

Ruffle – fabric that is shirred or gathered to create a flounce

Pillow Tuck – a bedcovering designed with extra length to cover and ‘tuck in’ pillows.

Piping – a decorative trim where Ό” cording is covered in fabric and used to edge or define soft goods such as duvets, pillows, and shams.

Shirred Jumbo Welt – A decorative trim where fabric is gathered or shirred over the cording for added texture and accent.

Welt – Another name for piping. A decorative trim where Ό” cording is covered in fabric and used to edge or define soft goods such as duvets, pillows and shams.
